2017 was a big year for civic tech in Toronto — here were some of the highlights for us:
- Civic Tech Toronto celebrated its 2-year anniversary (and 100th hacknight)
- Several new and ongoing hacknight projects have made huge leaps forward in participation, user research, developing prototypes and releasing updates
- Civic Tech Toronto supported EDGI (aka Guerilla Archiving Project) to save valuable environment data. Coverage: TVO Climate Watch Short, NOW Toronto, Torontoist
- The BikeSpace project kicked off the first civic tech community project working in collaboration with city staff
- We set a hacknight attendance record of 185 participants one Tuesday in September
- Now Magazine and Startup Here profiled several local civic tech leaders as part of a feature
- Civic Tech Toronto had a strong presence at the Code for America Brigade Congress in Philadelphia, and featured in coverage by GovTech
- Working with Connected Lab, we launched Wild Combination, a rapid ideation civic tech card game which was a hit at the Code for America Brigade Congress, and at the YIMBY Festival
- CodeAcross Toronto 2017 in March was much-loved by participants and challenge owners — and we’re gearing up for the next CodeAcross in March 2018
- Civic Tech Toronto figured prominently in the launch of Code for Canada, and there are now SEVEN active civic tech community groups across Canada!
We’re looking forward to 2018! See you at a hacknight!
