New technologies and organizations’ practices are regularly placing pressures and challenges on our privacy and transparency rights. This month, Civic Tech Toronto and the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario are highlighting the work to defend, enforce, explain and update these rights.
“Dark patterns” are user interface design tactics that influence users to make choices that benefit an online service. Traditionally, dark patterns have relied on visual design elements and encouraged superficial user actions like clicking a button. However, dark patterns are now appearing in interactive dialogue between users and AI chatbots. This talk discusses why AI dark patterns may pose novel privacy risks and be especially difficult to resist – especially for young users.
